Like any business, online or mortar & brick, you need to take a few steps to get it off the ground and running. Let’s look at what these steps are.
✅ 1. Pick One Niche (And Stick to It!)
🔍 What’s a Niche?
A niche is a specific topic or interest group. Instead of trying to promote everything to everyone, you focus on a specific audience with a specific problem.
💡 Examples of Niches:
- Fitness for new moms
- Budget travel for students
- AI tools for content creators
- At-home cooking for busy professionals
- Remote work tools for digital nomads
🎯 Why This Matters:
When you focus on one niche, it becomes easier to:
- Create consistent content
-
- posting on a daily consistent basis will help you create your authority on the subject.
-
- Build trust and authority
-
- without trust from your followers, you can’t expect to have them continuing to follow you.
-
- Attract followers
-
- all those who can relate to your niche will want to commit to following you.
-
✅ 2. Find 2–3 Products to Promote
Once you have your niche, you’ll want to find products that help solve your audience’s problems.
Never forget, this is what you want to do: solve their problem!
🛍️ How to Choose the Right Products:
- Is it helpful? Does it actually solve a problem your audience has?
- Is it trustworthy? Would you use it yourself?
- Does it pay well? Look at commission rates. Digital tools often pay more (30–50% or more).
- Recurring vs. one-time: Some tools pay you every month (recurring) as long as your referral stays a customer.
💰 Where to Find Products:
- Affiliate networks like ShareASale, Impact, or ClickBank
- Search “[product name] affiliate program” in Google
- Use tools like PartnerStack, which list SaaS (software) programs
Start with 2–3 products max so you can really learn how to sell them well.
✅ 3. Create Simple Content That Solves Problems
🤔 Why Content Matters -People usually go online to solve problems they are encountering in their daily lives.
- “How do I lose weight at home when I can’t go to the gym?”
- “What’s the best email marketing tool for beginners?”
- “How do I start a YouTube channel?”
Your job as an affiliate marketer is to create content that answers those questions—and then naturally recommend a product that helps.
Remember, this is the secret behind affiliate success: be helpful first, sell second.
When you do this right:
- You help your audience
- You build trust
- You earn commissions when they click and buy
🛠 Because great content will not only bring you the audience you need but the commissions from the sales they will generate. You need to remember a few points relative to content that sells without feeling “salesy”.
Understand Your Audience’s Problems
You can’t solve problems if you don’t know what your audience is struggling with.
Ask yourself:
- What are the most common questions in my niche?
- What tools or solutions can help them?
- What outcome does my audience really want?
Example (Fitness Niche):
- Problem: “I don’t have time to go to the gym.”
- Solution: “At-home workouts using [affiliate fitness app]”
- Outcome: “Lose weight at home in just 20 minutes a day”
Pick One Problem Per Piece of Content
Don’t try to solve everything in one post or video. Pick one specific problem per piece of content.
Examples:
- “How to start a podcast with no technical experience” (recommend podcast hosting)
- “How to design Instagram graphics fast” (recommend Canva)
- “How to build your email list for free” (recommend ConvertKit free plan)
This keeps your content clear, focused, and useful. With that said, here are a few content types that work in the Affiliate Marketing world:
-
Tutorials & How-To Guides – Teach people how to do something—step by step.
✅ Why it works: People love clear instructions
✅ Where to promote: Blog, YouTube, Pinterest
Example:
“How to Create a Website in 30 Minutes (No Tech Needed)”
➡️ Recommend a hosting company like Bluehost or Hostinger
-
Product Reviews – Share your honest opinion about a product you use.
✅ Why it works: People read reviews before buying
✅ Tip: Show screenshots, real use cases, and pros/cons
Example:
“Why I Switched from Mailchimp to ConvertKit (And You Should Too)”
➡️ Add your affiliate link in the review
-
Comparison Posts – Help people decide between two or more options.
✅ Why it works: Saves them time researching
✅ Pro tip: Link to all the products with affiliate links
Example:
“ConvertKit vs. Mailchimp: Which Is Better for Beginners?”
-
Top 5 or Top 10 Lists – Round up several products that solve a specific problem.
✅ Why it works: Quick to read, easy to link to multiple products
✅ Can be used for physical or digital items
Example:
“5 Best Microphones for New Podcasters”
➡️ Link to Amazon or podcast gear affiliate programs
-
Case Studies & Personal Stories – Show your own results from using a product or tool.
✅ Why it works: Builds trust through real experience
✅ Great for blog posts, YouTube videos, and emails
Example:
“How I Grew My YouTube Channel Using [Tool] in 30 Days”
-
Freebie/Checklist with Email Sign-Up – Offer a small free guide, cheat sheet, or checklist that includes affiliate links inside.
✅ Why it works: Builds your email list while still earning
✅ Add affiliate links inside the free download
Example:
“Free Checklist: Everything You Need to Start a Blog”
➡️ Inside the checklist: Hosting (affiliate), themes (affiliate), email tool (affiliate)
✍️ Writing Tips (Even if You’re Not a Writer)
- Use simple, clear language
- Write like you’re talking to a friend
- Break up long paragraphs
- Use bullets, numbers, and headings
- Include real screenshots or photos
- Always include a CTA – call to action (example: “Click here to try it for free”)
🚫 What NOT to Do
- Don’t copy and paste generic product descriptions
- Don’t overload with affiliate links
- Don’t promote products you haven’t checked out
- Don’t make false claims or overhype
Remember: trust is everything in affiliate marketing.
🎯 Final Thoughts on Creating Simple, Problem-Solving Content
You don’t need to be an expert or have a fancy camera to succeed.
You just need to:
- Understand what your audience is struggling with
- Make helpful content that answers their questions
- Recommend good products as a natural part of your solution
- Stay consistent—results come over time
✅ 4. Share Your Link (In the Right Places)
To make money, people need to click your affiliate link and buy. That means you need to get your content seen. The best way to promote your content is using Social Media currently open to everyone. Here are a few examples:
- Blog posts from your website (SEO can bring traffic long-term)
- YouTube videos (tutorials or reviews)
- Pinterest pins (great for blog traffic)
- TikTok / Instagram Reels (short-form content is hot)
Each piece of content should include:
- Your honest experience
- A clear CTA – call to action (“Click here to try X”)
- Your affiliate link
⚠️ Be Transparent:
Always let people know you use affiliate links. It builds trust—and keeps you legally safe. Say something like:
“This post contains affiliate links. If you click and buy, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.”
✅ 5. Stay Consistent (It Takes Time)
Here’s the truth: most people quit before they see success.
📅 What to Expect:
- Month 1–2: You’re building. Learning. No results yet? Totally normal.
- Month 3–6: You’ll start getting clicks, maybe a few sales.
- Month 6+: If you stay consistent, you’ll have content ranking, email subscribers, and growing income.
Consistency is key:
- Write 1 blog post or script 1 video per week
- Share 1–3 pieces of content daily on your social media account (Tik Tok videos)
- Keep learning and tweaking your approach
Even just 1 hour a day can build momentum and with that momentum, growth will come. Don’t forget, this will also take time. The next 6 months and 1st year will be a great determining factor!

Hi Marc – Wow, you have done a very thorough job describing a niche and the importance of utilizing it to not only benefit an online business but to add value to people’s lives. There is just so much here, and this one is worth bookmarking for future reference. Thank you for sharing some resources on where we can go to find relatable and relevant products that fit our niche and can help our customers. This post is gold!
Hi Ernie, appreciate your comment and yes, I’ve tried to include as much info as possible; then again, makes for subsequent posts possible! There’s too much info to provide in only one!
Excellent post about niches. As affiliate marketers we often forget our jobs which is to promote products and create contents that answer specific needs or problems faced by our audience. Knowing what’s their problem is indeed a must. And having the genuine desire to help them is also a must. I particularly liked your Why it works and How/What to promote sections.
Thank you Marc!
Thanks Martin, I always look back and think about how selecting the niche you want to work and create your content for is such a vital part of our success. Appreciate the fact that even after all this time, looking back at my “why” and realigning it to my current situation is such an important step; something we should do on a regular basis btw!
Hey Marc, this guide is fantastic! I appreciate how well you laid out the fundamentals. This would have been very helpful for when I started my journey, so I know it will be helpful for a beginner reading this. You absolutely nail it with the advice to pick one niche and focus on solving problems for people first. That’s a lesson I’ve definitely seen make all the difference.
The content ideas are really helpful for anyone looking to mix up their approach, and your emphasis on consistency is so true. It really does take time and persistence to see results, and that reminder is always valuable. This post is a major win for anyone navigating the affiliate marketing world.
Meredith
Hi Meredith, thank you so much for your comment. It is so true that if we could have had access to this little gem of information when many of us started off, it might have saved us a few dark moments!
You are right, with determination, persistence and time, anyone can do this and be successful! Some of the key ingredients to never forget!
Loved this, Marc. Such a clear, no-fluff guide to getting started and staying consistent—which is honestly the hardest part some days! Your reminder to focus on helping first and selling second really hit home. It’s easy to forget that simple truth when you’re knee-deep in “Should I post this or start over?”
Also, YES to celebrating the little wins! If we don’t slow down and notice the progress, we miss the whole point.
Hi Alison,
Being consistent is the biggest challenge!
The little wins bring us closer to the big wins which is definitely the goal but we must celebrate the little wins!
