Why I Chose Affiliate Marketing
When I first stumbled across affiliate marketing, I was just looking for a way to make a little extra money on the side. Something flexible, something meaningful—something that wouldn’t force me to sacrifice everything else in my life. What I didn’t realize at the time was that affiliate marketing would eventually become more than just a side hustle. It became a path toward freedom, growth, and personal evolution—though not without its challenges.
This post isn’t just about the why behind my decision to pursue affiliate marketing. It’s also about the how—how I’m learning, failing, rebuilding, and slowly but surely building this into something that can replace my income and pension. I want to share the good, the bad, and the unexpected parts of this journey with you. A previous blog entry talked about that.
Why Affiliate Marketing?
The appeal of affiliate marketing is obvious on the surface. You don’t need to create your own product. You don’t need to deal with inventory or shipping. You simply promote products or services you believe in and earn a commission when someone buys through your link.
But the real reason I chose affiliate marketing runs deeper.
I chose affiliate marketing because it allows me to help people while helping myself. The core of this business is based on value—providing honest, helpful information and connecting people to tools and resources that can genuinely solve their problems.
And for someone like me, who values growth, learning, and freedom, it felt like a perfect fit.
I didn’t get into this thinking I’d make a fortune overnight. And if you’re reading this thinking affiliate marketing is a get-rich-quick scheme, I hate to break it to you—it’s not. But what it is, is a real business opportunity that rewards patience, consistency, and personal development.
The Reality: It Takes Time
When I first started, I thought I’d figure things out quickly—maybe even see a few commissions roll in within the first month. But like most people who start in affiliate marketing, I quickly learned that this business is a marathon, not a sprint.
Building an audience, gaining their trust, and learning how to communicate value—it takes time. And I’ll be honest: in the beginning, I struggled with self-doubt. “Who’s going to listen to me?” “What do I have to offer?”
But that’s the hidden beauty of affiliate marketing. As you build your business, you build yourself. You become a better communicator. A better listener. A better thinker.
With every piece of content I created, I gained more confidence. Every time someone replied to a video or a post saying, “Hey, that actually helped me,” I realized I was moving in the right direction—even if I wasn’t earning thousands of dollars just yet.
Growth Comes in Many Forms
One of the most unexpected benefits of affiliate marketing for me has been personal growth. Sure, I’ve learned a lot about digital tools, content strategies, email marketing, and SEO. But more than that, I’ve learned how to trust myself.
Creating content consistently—whether it’s a blog post, a short video, or an email—requires discipline. It forces you to get clear about your message and your values. You can’t just copy what others are doing and expect long-term success. You have to find your voice.
Over time, I began to see my subscriber list grow. My engagement rates also improved. But the most valuable thing I grew wasn’t a number—it was a sense of purpose. Knowing that I was providing real value to real people who were trying to solve real problems—that lit a fire in me that I didn’t know I had.
Learning From Mistakes ( Plenty Of Those)
Let me be clear: I’ve made mistakes. Many of them. And I’m sure I’m going to make some more!
I’ve promoted products too soon, without fully understanding them myself. I’ve written content that didn’t connect. I’ve wasted time chasing trends and comparing myself to others. I’ve struggled with procrastination, a little bit of a burnout, and imposter syndrome.
But every single mistake has been a stepping stone.
I’ve learned that success in affiliate marketing doesn’t come from doing everything perfectly. It comes from doing things consistently—even when you mess up. It comes from being willing to look at your results, admit what isn’t working, and then try again.
And most importantly, it comes from being authentic. People can sense when you’re just trying to make a quick buck. But they can also sense when you’re genuinely trying to help them. That’s the difference between short-term clicks and long-term trust.
The Challenges and Drawbacks
Affiliate marketing isn’t perfect. Like any business, it comes with its own set of struggles.
For starters, it can be incredibly lonely. Especially if you’re building your business online by yourself. There’s no boss telling you what to do, no coworkers to bounce ideas off of. It’s just you, your computer, and your drive.
Then there’s the information overload. There are so many strategies, tools, and gurus out there that it’s easy to get paralyzed. Should I focus on Tik Tok or YouTube? Should I build an email list or a funnel? What platform is best? Who do I trust?
Not to mention the emotional rollercoaster of inconsistent income. One month might be great. The next? Crickets. That kind of unpredictability can mess with your mindset if you’re not grounded.
And let’s be real—some people in this space don’t play fair. There are scams, hype, and exaggerated promises everywhere. Part of the challenge is learning to navigate that noise and hold yourself to a higher standard.
Resilience Is the Real Secret
If I had to sum up what it takes to make it in affiliate marketing in one word, it would be resilience.
It’s not the flashiest trait. It’s not what the gurus usually highlight in their ads. But it’s the thing that separates those who quit from those who win.
Resilience means showing up even when you feel discouraged. It means learning from the hard days, not hiding from them. It means trusting that the seeds you’re planting today will grow—if you keep watering them.
I’ve committed myself 100% to building this business—not because it’s easy, but because it’s worth it. I’ve already seen what’s possible when you stay the course, and I believe that with time, effort, and a little faith, this second income will become my primary one.
Final Thoughts
Affiliate marketing isn’t a golden ticket. It’s not passive income from day one. And it’s certainly not for everyone.
But for me, it’s been a journey of transformation. It’s forced me to step outside my comfort zone, face my fears, and become the kind of person who creates value, not just chases it.
If you’re considering this path, I encourage you to go in with your eyes open. Understand that it takes time. Be willing to learn. Be willing to fail forward. And above all, be willing to serve—because the more people you help, the more successful you’ll become. I truly believe that.
I’m still in the infancy of my journey, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come. And I know that if I stay resilient, keep showing up, and keep learning, I’ll get to where I want to be.
Affiliate marketing isn’t just a business to me anymore—it’s a mission. And I’m here for the long haul.

Hi Meredith,
Thank you for your comment and one of the big things I don’t take for granted on this beautiful journey is the support I’ve been receiving from people like you. It’s a lonely world when you’re self-employed and there’s nothing more important than to surround yourself with like-minded people! Thanks for being there!
Hi Marc – This is such a real post about real feelings and about real business! I love this so much because I resonate with it and relate to many of the things that you identified here. You’re right, it is not a golden ticket, but the results can be priceless. Not just monetarily, but in learning about oneself and what one is capable of doing. If you would have told me that after leaving my corporate job I would be in this type of a gig, I would have wondered what you were drinking or smoking, but that’s not the case as here I am. Thank you for writing this very real and relatable piece!
Hi Ernie,
So many great stories could be written and read regarding people like you or me; the fact that we are continuing our journey – even when we have all the knee-jabs and valleys of disappointments and discontents! I always take the time to look back and realize: “wow! I did that!”.
Thanks for your comments and keep going, you’re doing fantastic as well!
Marc, I like how you’ve shown the real side of affiliate marketing, both the rewards and the struggles. The point about resilience being the key to long-term success is very true. Your honesty about mistakes and lessons learned makes this feel very genuine. It’s encouraging to see how much personal growth can come from building this kind of business. Your journey is a good reminder that patience and consistency are worth it.
Hi Atif,
In this business journey, the thought of making errors and struggling during the whole process can be daunting. But when we stop and think that by “doing” we are moving forward and learning from our mistakes, we grow and become better at it all – less mistakes and better results! Cheers!
