Thirty days ago, the idea of putting myself in front of a camera and sharing that with the world made me uncomfortable. Like many others building an online business, I was more comfortable behind the scenes – like doing voice-over work – where I felt most comfortable and knew that my experience was there. But as I reflected on what truly makes people connect, trust, and engage, I realized that I needed to change something fundamental: my visibility.
One month in, I’ve seen tangible growth in engagement, connection, and authenticity. My Social Media accounts, specifically Tik Tok, has seen a growth in views, comments and likes.
In this post, I’ll be sharing my online video journey—from reluctance to confidence—and offer practical steps to help you build trust, boost visibility, and grow your own online business through video marketing.
The Hesitation
I used to think that content was enough—as long as I posted consistently, shared tips, or promoted products, I was doing my part. But deep down, I felt disconnected. I avoided video because I feared judgment, imperfection, and vulnerability. What would they comment? How would I be perceived? It wasn’t just stage fright—it was self-doubt disguised as strategy.
The problem? I was asking people to trust a brand without ever showing them the person behind it. And if I’m honest, I didn’t fully trust my own voice either (no pun intended on my voice-over experience). That discomfort became a barrier not just to growth, but to me being authentic.
My Turning Point
It didn’t happen overnight. But one day, I asked myself: “If I saw someone building a business and never once showing their face, would I be compelled to trust them?” The answer was most likely no.
That’s when I challenged myself. I didn’t need to go viral, and I didn’t need to have it all figured out—I just needed to be visible in a consistent way.

So, for 30 days, I committed to showing up on video, not as a marketing tactic, but as a mindset shift. I wasn’t chasing attention; I was building a connection.
Every video I posted helped me see my own journey more clearly. I spoke less like a seller and more like a human, and the responses started to reflect that shift.

What I learned
- Authenticity Over Perfection – My early videos were rough. I stumbled, forgot lines, even rammed the camera inadvertently. But what resonated wasn’t perfection—it was effort and authenticity. Vulnerability builds trust faster than polish.
- Your Voice Is Your Brand – Text captions are one thing. Speaking your truth on camera is another. Personal branding thrives on tone, expression, and energy—elements that text can’t convey. My voice became a direct channel to connect with my audience.
- Confidence Is Built, Not Given – I didn’t wait to “feel ready”. I started recording. Each take, each post, pushed me closer to ease and confidence. Gradually, my comfort level translated into better presence and a more consistent message.
- People Connect With Process – Sharing progress—wins and struggles—inspired messages like, “I needed this today” or “You made me feel brave enough to start”. That’s powerful. Showing real effort gives your audience permission to grow with you.
If you’re building an online business and you’re still hiding behind posts, I see you. I was you. But the truth is, people don’t buy products—they buy into people. And the more of you they see, the more they believe in what you are building.
How You Can Start Showing Up Today
If you’re avoiding video—and believe me, I was there—here’s how you can begin :
- Start small
Aim for one 30‑second clip per day or one longer video per week. Keep it manageable. - Keep it real
Talk about your current challenges. “Here’s where I’m stuck…” builds deeper connection than a playlist of success tips. - Forget perfection
Use your smartphone, natural light, simple backgrounds. People care about your message more than production value. - Speak to someone
Picture one real person who needs this message. Tailoring to a specific audience makes your delivery more natural and powerful. - Reflect as you go
Journal after each video—what worked, what didn’t. Over time, you will see patterns as well as improvements, and more importantly, unexpected growth.
These steps aren’t marketing gimmicks—they’re practices in visibility and personal branding. Through video marketing, you’re not just selling a product or service; you’re inviting others into your journey.
Also, this isn’t about becoming an influencer. Which, I believe, bring nothing to their viewers, it’s about becoming a leader—of your own voice, your own brand, and your own journey. Something nobody can take away from you.
Thirty days ago, I wouldn’t have imagined myself being on video. Forget about doing it so consistent. Now, I can’t imagine building my business without it. Not because the algorithm demands it, but because it’s become a practice of presence, confidence and, more importantly, daily habit.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to step in front of the camera—this is it. You don’t need perfect lighting, expensive gear, or confidence that you’re “camera-ready.” You just need presence.
Start small. Speak your truth. Share your process. In doing so, you’ll not only grow your online business, but you will also inspire others to grow with you.
The way you care about your listeners matters, your efforts matter—and most of all, your voice matters. Show up. The world is ready to see you.

Marc, you were far ahead of everyone else when you put that cool recording on your posts. You might take that for granted, but for me, it’s was a great way to get to know you! You would do well podcasting because of that voice of yours. Do you do any voice exercises before you go “live?”
Hi Kate,
Thanks for your comment and compliment. I used to in the past when I started off. Now it’s more of a few facial stretches and hop right into it!
Hey Marc! Everything you said here sounds so familiar, especially the part about hiding behind content and thinking that was enough. I was right there not too long ago.
It actually took me six months just to get myself onto TikTok because I was petrified to put myself out there. I’d find every reason under the sun to stall, “I need better lighting,” “My voice sounds weird,” “I’ll just post a blog instead.” Sound familiar? 😅 But once I finally did it (after pep talks and so many takes), I slowly got used to seeing myself on camera. Then, it started to feel second nature!
So, please know you’re not alone. It’s totally normal. You’re doing great! Keep going, keep showing up, and trust me, it gets easier and so much more rewarding.
Meredith
Hi Meredith,
Thank you so much for this great upbeat comment! I truly appreciate what you’re saying and one thing is for sure: once we’ve got it started, there’s no way to stop us! Take care!
Hi Marc – You and I seem to share the same mind with this endeavor. I also participated in the 30-Day Challenge and I made it through to the end. while I had posted several videos prior to this challenge, my posting this time was more intentional about gaining followers and visitors so that I could prepare for the selling part of the opportunity. As I said, you and I share the same concerns, but this did not deter either of us as it appears. Thank you for so precisely identifying how to make this process more enjoyable and user friendly. I appreciate the five steps that you provided as you seem to have nailed down the basics and the foundation. Nice job And I’ll see you on the platform!
Hi Ernie,
Thank you for your comment and sticking to it for the whole duration! We are in it for the long haul and the great part about it all is that we’ll also get better and better at it as we continue!
Wishing you all the best in the next phase we’re coming into – and further down the line!
