It was always the best excuse….heck, the only excuse… It didn’t work out because the bloody thing wasn’t good! … or was it?
I look back at all the shinny objects, essentially online courses that were sold to me with the premise of almost becoming a millionaire with a few clicks of a mouse and one thing always comes back to haunt me: I had the perfect excuse…it didn’t work.
Did I put all of my energies and thoughts into making it work? Did I focus on that one program to make it successful? Most of the times. But one thing was for sure, I sure didn’t put all the focus I had to make THAT ONE work. Most of the times, I’d hop onto the next shinny thing before even finishing the course I had purchased!
Changes
Internet Marketing and more specifically, Affiliate Marketing has gone through so many changes over the past 5-10-15 years that anything that wasn’t possible back then, you can easily do now. I remember when you had to pay handsomely for a web-designer to get a website up; and don’t forget about those server fees! wow, many were out of this world!
Today, you’ve got so many programs that simplify everything that you can have a website or blog like this one, up and running with a few clicks. Now granted, getting to know how WordPress works is another thing but essentially speaking, you can become quite good at it quite rapidly.
But back to our discussion. There’s practically no reason why anybody who puts their heart, the energy and time into it to NOT succeed. But there’s always a caveat….
You’ll still find that shinny object out there that will sell you the idea that since it’s so easy now, you can actually make more money more quickly than before! Three clicks and there goes five thousand dollars made! A few clicks more and we’re up to ten thousand!
Reality
The reality many of us have come to learn about this is that you can still make some pretty darn good money online – literally millions – but as my mentor Dean Holland mentions in his book The Iceberg Effect, focus will get you where you want to be. Without focus, you’ll still click on those other “shinny objects” and see if you can’t get to the “promised land” of financial freedom another way.
One of the first things I did once I started working with Dean was to unsubscribe and delete all the other emails I was getting or was subscribed to that offered all these promises. It was funny to see that instead of having 40-50 emails per day, (I was important), I now was only getting maybe 3 or 4 and those were pretty much easy to delete.
Give Yourself Time
The other little thing that you have to also include in all of this? Time. You can’t believe that you’ll become good at Affiliate Marketing without any hiccups or time. It just doesn’t happen.
Everybody who is a mentor didn’t become one overnight, it took time. With time, you’ll not only become great at it but you too will be able to help others achieve financial success.
Another Reality Tidbit
If you went back and started talking to any one of the owners of those programs you had paid for (some quite dearly I’m sure), and bluntly asked them how many of their students or clients had been successful with their program? I’m positive one of the answers you could anticipate would be: “it really depended on the focus and amount of time they all put in…”
Another reality might be of those who had purchased the program, how many had actually completed it and made some money with it. If you’re a positive guy like me, you’d probably figure that the amount would be high… then again, reality can be somewhat somber and show you that many would have also jumped off to the next shinny object.
Working A Proven System
It’s been said so many times: “don’t try to reinvent the wheel”. Find a system that works and work at it. As you may know, many of the programs out there are not only selling a pipe-dream, they’re out there just to make a buck; and that is the other reality of it all.
On the other happier side, you have mentors, like Dean Holland, who will not only teach you how to work a proven system but will also make sure that everything you need to succeed – whether it be support, email support or video support, is available. The first step you only need to do is order his book, The Iceberg Effect and pay only the shipping and handling fees.
Success IS Around The Corner
After reading this, you’re probably saying to yourself: “ok, so when can I anticipate success?”. The answer to that question can be easy…and can be hard.
I chose to follow Dean Holland because I found out that he was not only a great mentor for Affiliate Marketing but he also cared about your success. No kidding; he does! The one thing he does expect is this: Focus and putting the time you have – whether it be 1 hour, 2 hours or anything in between or less and putting everything in place for you to succeed.
If you look at the past year and what I’ve published – or not – you’ll see that it took me a bit of time to realize that and make sure that I kept focused on my success and what I needed to do to be successful at Affiliate Marketing.

Indeed, affiliate marketing has changed a lot over the last 20 years.
I started 17 years ago and I remembered having to learn a little bit of html to get my website up.
Although WordPress was already available at that time, but I haven’t heard of it until a few years later. And while it does have some learning curve, it is so much easier to work with than a html website.
Hi Alan,
Thank you for your comment and you are so right. I remember when I started out how so many things were time consuming as far as training and remembering what to do and you literally almost had to have a knowledge in so many facets of website building and online marketing that you could lose yourself.
And let’s not forget, “dial-up” and it’s oh so funny sounds, bells and whistles!! (That should age us pretty well!)
All the best and to our success!
Marc, really good summary from you. It’s great that you’ve now moved away from all the false promises that people give us online. Now that you have Dean as a mentor and the affiliate system to follow you are in very good hands. I wish you all the best and I look forward to your journey to success. Thank you my friend, Atif
Hi Atif,
Always a pleasure to read you and thank you for having taken the time to come and write your comment. I truly believe that I’m in good hands with Dean and more importantly, that he really cares about our success!
To our success my friend!
There are a few really good mentors out there and I’m sure I’d put Dean amongst them. Follow their guidance for the best route to success and give it 100% effort.
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your comment and yes, you’re right – although they are far and between – there are so good ones out there and Dean is one of them!
(I wouldn’t forget Glenn who might be in the background but is definitely a big asset for IP)!
Take care,
Marc,
The key words you used were focus and action. The thing about most programs is we like to blame the program instead of looking internally to find out why a program did not work.
I have found for myself often there was nothing wrong with the program. What was wrong was my attitude, focus and actions didn’t allow me to be successful in the programs. So, would go an get the next shiny object. Until I discovered that it was me and not the program, I kept going in circles.
Tony Robins says, “Where focus is energy flow”.
May your focus and energy lead you to your desired outcome.
CJ
Hi CJ,
Thank you for your great comment! It does go a long way when you have the proper focus and take the actions required. In my case, it was really about having a great attitude and willingness to take action but most of the times, the lacking of a clear mentor to bring us to the finish line was a big part of it all.
Having said that, Dean definitely shows us that he’s willing to but the energy, time and focus in helping us succeed.
To our success!
Hi Marc,
This is such an important post and I wish more affiliate marketers would post on this topic. I am an advocate of this message and wish it was out there more often to prevent others from falling for these lies! Thanks for sharing this and I wish you success in affiliate marketing. I look forward to your next posts!
Denny
Thanks for your comment and compliment Denny,
Most times, you’re either ashamed of talking about how you were “snuffed” out of a few hundred (if not thousand) dollars or just don’t want to have someone tell you “I told you so!” even if they don’t know anything about it.
Looking forward to the future! To our success!
Hey Marc,
yes, now we can build a website with a click of a button with AI help.
Glad you mentioned the advice from your mentor about focus. Alex Hormozi once said: A focused fool can accomplish more than a distracted genius. I will sing under this statement with both hands.
About time another advice I received from Alex was to count your efforts in 100-hour blocks. This is the time you need to put into something to see the results. Less than that is just time wasted which increases the chances of getting distracted.
Speak soon. Tom
Hi Tom,
I really love what Alex mentioned! It definitely can take quite a few hours before you see any results; perseverance – without going overboard on the time spent on a specific task – is a definite plus.
Thanks for dropping by and for your great comment.
