August Action Plan – Part 2 of 4 Here We Go!

So by now, you’ve hopefully checked out my Tik Tok videos (the link will bring you to my account on Tik Tok) and more importantly, you’ve provided some great feedback as to how I can make them better! Don’t be shy, I have no ego – mostly when it comes to this part of growing my business because don’t forget, we are here to learn, and help each other grow.

So last week, we talked about how Tik Toks algorithm might work – how essentially Tik Tok will first show your content to a limited size – as long as the video keeps performing, it will essentially widen its scope afterwards.

The more your channel becomes popular, and the more your content is considered authoritative, the bigger the crowd it will be shown to. What Tik Tok wants to have are videos that educate, entertain and inspire. If you can provide that type of content, you will definitely find your videos to be shown to a bigger crowd.

It’s also been said that there is a “sweet spot” to post your video online. Look, because of the social media world we live in, it always depend on who is watching, where they reside and what their local time is. I can post my video at 8:00am Eastern Standard time here in Ottawa, Canada but that makes it 1:00pm in London, UK, Midnight in Auckland, New Zealand and 9:00pm in Tokyo, Japan.

Everything is relative also as to when people usually tend to look at videos. Considering what I’m currently seeing, everyone is pretty much on their phones all the time! That being said, it again goes back to your content and how your prospective listener is “hooked” to listening to it.

Some of the metrics that are important though are (in no particular order): saves, comments, likes, follows, shares and watch time (did they watch it all or just the first 10 seconds). I won’t go into details as to what those are; everyone pretty much knows what they represent.

One such metric that Tik Tok relies a lot on is the “Completion Time Goals” which, on Tik Tok, refers to the number of times users watch a video until the end. Essentially, it measures how effective your content is at retaining viewers throughout the entire video. It’s an important metric to track because it indicates audience engagement and helps you refine your content strategy.

The ideal completion time for Tik Tok videos can vary based on the type of content and audience preferences. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Trend-based Content: For challenges or trends, aim for 10 to 20 seconds. This duration keeps viewers engaged while delivering concise content.
  2. Educational or How-To Videos: If you’re sharing knowledge or teaching a skill, consider videos around 30 to 45 seconds.
  3. General Videos: TikTok now allows videos ranging from 3 seconds to 10 minutes. Finding the right balance between engaging storytelling and concise content is key.

Don’t forget, longer narratives can be broken into smaller segments for easier consumption by the listener.

And let’s not forget, Tik Tok’s optimal video length has evolved over time. Initially, videos of 11 to 17 seconds were recommended, but by the end of 2021, the ideal length increased to 24 to 31 seconds. Experimenting with different durations to see what resonates best with your target audience is really the best option!

One last point If viewers consistently watch your videos to completion, it suggests that your content resonates well with them. Now that’s the goal! You really need to keep an eye on that metric to optimize your Tik Tok presence!

So here’s to week 2 of my August blogs being done! Go check out my videos on Tik Tok  and let me know how I can make better ones! Next week, we’ll talk about how you need to have clear goals and objectives when it comes to your Tik Tok videos.

  1. Hi Marc,

Great post! The breakdown of TikTok’s algorithm and the importance of metrics like completion time is super helpful. It’s clear that understanding these details can really make a difference in growing a TikTok presence.

I appreciate how you emphasize the need for content that educates, entertains, and inspires, that’s a solid strategy for reaching a broader audience. Your tips on video length are especially useful, and I’m going to experiment with different durations to see what works best for my audience.

Looking forward to your next post on setting clear goals for TikTok videos. Keep up the great work!

    1. Thank you Meredith for your great comment and support. Looking forward to getting better at all of these videos and more importantly, getting to that 1K subscribed list!

  2. Personally, I have been trying to stick to 30 seconds or so but haven’t seen any marked improvement in the numbers. I guess my content is not that appealing. Ah well, we keep on trying.

    1. Hi Andy,
Maybe you need to be a little more decisive in what you want to say in that 30 seconds? Hook line can be 10 seconds and then a quick explanation for 10 seconds and a last 10 seconds offering them to contact you for additional info?
One thing is for sure: you can ask Dean during the Q&A daily ask me questions.
      All the best!

  5. Marc thanks for the useful tips about using TT. You sound like you are really enjoying this part of your traffic journey! With each platform having so many similar but different ways to approach your audiences on them it’s no wonder that it really takes some time to become proficient with them. Keep enjoying your progress and moving forward!

    1. Hi Ken,
Great comment and thank you for the upbeat message. I know that this will take time but the more time I put in, the better I will become: and that is just a fact!
      All the best!

  6. Thanks for sharing these insights about TikTok’s strategy! The breakdown of how the algorithm works and the importance of metrics like completion time is important, especially for those of us trying to navigate the platform.

I appreciate the reminder that content needs to educate, entertain, and inspire—balancing these elements is key to keeping viewers engaged.

Your advice on experimenting with different video lengths makes sense.
TikTok thrives on creativity and testing what works best for your unique audience.

    1. Hi Eleanor,
Thank you ever so much for such a detailed and well written comment. I’m also looking forward to getting better at these videos and bringing a better understanding to subscribers. Thank you again!

  7. This is great, Marc! I am now following you on your channel. Good videos so far. Glad to see you’re getting your feet wet. Module 6 of the Beginner’s Advantage in AS is a good resource for creating videos. Dean has been coaching me on providing snappy, quick-paced videos with a strong hook in the first 3 seconds to grab the viewer’s attention. He shared a video of one he created as an example. If you haven’t watched those videos in that module, I strongly urge you to do so, as it will provide you with much information specific to TikTok. Also, research popular (as in many views) videos in this niche and watch how they structure them. I know it will take a lot of practice to get good, but Dean is great, and the training he provides is the best. If you want to follow me, I am @vanessaleaonline. See you on TikTok.

    1. Hi Vanessa,
Thank you thank you thank you! Truly appreciate your comment and will definitely look that up. Being on vacation taught me a lot (ironically) about how to work/edit my Tik Tok videos; any help on that front is greatly appreciated!
      See you on Tik Tok!
